Niigata Summer School 1996, Japan Report
This report contains my personal impressions of the Niigata Summer School l996. A special attention is turn to the experience with the hostfamilies. I think the official events of the Summer school l996 are well-known.
During the Niigata Summer School 1996 I had the chance to live at two Japanese families. This direct contact with the families was the most impressed event of the Summer School for me. I think this is the best kind to learn about the culture of living . In my opinion a student exchange without homestay account just the half.
I was accommodate for two weeks at the Suzuki
family, a farmerfamily. The family is Mr. Masami Suzuki (age36),
his wife, his two sons (age 3 and 5) , his mother and his
grandpa. They lives in the village Takenomachi not far from
Niigata. The family lives in a large farmerhouse. So it was not a
problem to let me stay in the house . The occupation of the
family is to farm a plantation of fruits and some fields of rice.
The Suzuki family was very pleasant, I think like all
hostfamilies.
The communication was a small problem. Just Mr. Suzuki spoken a little bit English. Otherwise we talked with "hands and foods".
I think I was a great reference for the Suzuki family, they was very proud to introduce me to all inhabitant of the village. They organized a Japanese barbecue party and a "kimono"- evening for me. As well they shown me the sights of the surroundings. As Mr. Suzuki is a member of a folklore group I could see how the old traditions still alive in the modern Japanese society.
During my time in Japan was the rice harvest. So, I had the chance to see the way of rice farming and to help (to drive the combine harvester).I become quickly a part of the family. So they offered me after the two weeks to stay the rest of the Summer School at them. I have accept this offer with thanks.
The Summer School in Niigata was interrupted with a visit of the old capital city Kyoto. All German students were accommodate at hostfamilies for two nights. I was accommodate at the Osaki family. The family is Mr. Atsushi Osaki (age 39) , Mrs. Masako Osaki (age 38) and the two daughter ( age 4 and 9). They lives in an ordinary cityhouse which is very small for german ratio. Nevertheless the Osaki family was very pleasant and open-minded.
My conclusions are that the Homestay at hostfamilies
and the Summer School in itself was a full success. Both the
German students and the Japanese hostfamilies has profit. I will
say thank you all organizers, all hostfamilies and all involved
Japanese students for the good time in Japan. It will be one of
the most impressed experience in my life. I hope that the student
exchange program will continue and other Japanese and German
students will have the chance to learn about the other country,
culture and people

新潟大学｢夏の学校1996｣ 報告 ヘルマー・テッパー
新潟における｢夏の学校1996｣の印象を報告します。公式日程については別途参照いただくとして、ホストファミリーのことを中心に述べます。
この期間２つの家に滞在しました。これらの家族の方々と触れ会えたことが今回の夏の学校の最も思い出となることでした。ホームステイは異国の生活や文化を知るもっとも良い機会です。ホームステイのない交換留学では意義が半減するでしょう。
２週間、農家のSUZUKI家に滞在しました。ご家族は夫妻と３，５歳の息子さん、祖父・祖母でした。家はNiigata近郊のTakenomachi村にあります。広いお宅でしたので、私が暮らすのに不自由はありませんでした。（訳者注：テッパー君は180cmをこえる長身。）家族は果実園と水田を耕作しています。SUZUKI家はたいへん明るく、それは他のホストファミリーでも同様でしょう。
SUZUKI氏は英語があまり話せなかったので会話にはすこし苦労しましたが、身振り手振りでなんとかしました。
彼等は自慢げに村の生活の全てを紹介してくれました。日本風バーベキューをしてくれたり、和服を着せてくれました。周辺の観光もさせてもらいました。SUZUKI氏は伝統保存会のメンバーでしたので、日本の昔からの伝統が現代の日本社会に残っていることを知りました。この時期は稲刈りでしたので、米の収穫の方法を知ることができましたし、コンバインの運転もさせてもらいました。私はすぐ家族の一員となれました。そのため後半のホームステイもSUZUKI家に滞在するようのぞまれ、よろこんでそのようにしたのです。
新潟のサマースクールでは日程のなかほどに古都・京都への旅行がありました。京都のホストファミリーで２泊させてもらいました。私はOSAKI家でした。ご家族はATSUSHI氏(39), MASAKOさん(38)、二人の娘さん(4,9)です。お宅は日本では普通の町屋で、ドイツと比べると非常に狭い家です。しかし、OSAKI家は大変すごしやすく、開放的でした。
このサマースクールでのホームステイは、私にとってすばらしい経験であったと言えます。われわれドイツ学生のみならず日本のホストファミリーにとっても、よいことでした。日本で楽しくすごせたことについて、お世話いただいた委員の方々、ホストファミリー、日本の学生諸君に感謝いたします。私の一生の思い出となるでしょう。この学生交流プログラムが今後も継続され、日本とドイツの学生が国と文化と民族をお互いに学びあう機会となることを期待しています。
